Tree removal in Rome, GA

Dead, leaning or in the way: what the job involves and what it costs.

A tree usually earns a removal in one of three ways around Rome: it died, it started leaning toward something that matters, or it's in the way of a driveway, an addition or the sun. The work is the same in each case. What changes the price is how much has to be lowered piece by piece instead of dropped whole.

Dropped whole or taken down in sections

Where there's plenty of open ground and nothing in the way, a trunk can often be felled in one piece. Close to a house, a fence or a neighbor's yard, the crown comes down in pieces: limbs cut and lowered on ropes, then the trunk in rounds. Tall trees over buildings sometimes need a crane. Angi puts crane time at about $500 for trees over 80 feet, lists crane service at $250 to $600 a day, and puts the hardest crane jobs at $6,000 to $7,000 all in.

Before anything is cut

  1. Check whose tree it is.The city's Tree Board plans and cares for trees in parks and along streets. In April 2026 Rome's Street Department took down a dead tree beside the Civic Center parking lot on Jackson Hill. If a tree may be in the right-of-way, ask the city first.
  2. Ask about permits on bigger jobs.Rome and Floyd County share a Unified Land Development Code. We couldn't confirm in citable form whether one tree on a home lot needs a permit, so call Rome-Floyd Building Inspection at 706-236-4480 or the planning office, particularly in a historic district or near a river.
  3. Look up for wires.Nobody without utility clearance should bring a body, rope or saw within 10 feet of a line over 750 volts. See trees near power lines.
  4. Settle the wood.Rome's solid waste crews don't pick up debris left by contractors. Ask whether the quote includes hauling the logs and brush, or leaving firewood rounds.

Removing a tree inside 200 feet of the Etowah, Oostanaula or Coosa banks as part of development work brings in the River Overlay District Committee. See the rules page.

Common questions

Who takes down a dead tree between the sidewalk and the street?

Ask the City of Rome first. Street and park trees are the Tree Board's concern, and in April 2026 the city's own Street Department removed a dead tree on Jackson Hill. The Tree Board contact listed on the city site is (706) 236-4456.

Is a pine cheaper to take down than an oak?

Angi lists a single pine at $250 to $1,500 but gives no separate figure for oaks, so ask for a quote on the specific tree.
